An overview on ankle anatomy

The human ankle is comprised of many structures that allows the joint to perform many intricate movements and athletic maneuvers. Ankle structures can become injured from sporting movements, overuse, or traumatic incidents.

The ankle joint works with the knee and foot to provide versatility and mobility to the lower extremity. It allows movement for flexion, extension as well as rotating and twisting of the foot.

Three bones connect to form the ankle joint.

• Tibia (Larger shin bone)
• Fibula (Smaller shin bone)
• Talus (Foot tarsal Bone)

The ankle joint is lined with articular cartilage, a smooth surface that eliminates friction and allows the bones to glide smoothly with motion.

The gastronemius muscles are responsible for pushoff strength of the ankle joint. This connects to the heel bone (calcaneus) as the Achilles tendon.
